INNOVA was selected by OPTI Canada to complete detailed acoustical modeling and the design, supply, and installation of noise control for the Long Lake Upgrader Project in Fort McMurray, Alberta.
SCOPE OF WORK
Detailed acoustical site modeling and mapping of all noise sources to ensure operations met or exceeded stringent Alberta health and safety regulations.
Design, supply and installation of a pre-engineered steel building frame, two-ton under-hung crane, proprietary acoustical equipment door, acoustical wall and roof assemblies, acoustical ventilation system, unit heaters and electrical lighting controls, piping, fittings, concrete and distribution for 4 buildings:
- Air Separator Unit (ASU)
- Pressure Swing Absorption (PSA)
- Soot Cake
- Hydrocracker (HCU)
Target noise level: 85 dBA at 1 m and 40 dBA at 1500 m.
INNOVA analyzed over 2,000 noise sources, developing a data collection and processing system for this scope of the project.
INNOVA integrated noise control with the Project’s safety program to develop noise mitigation designs that reduced the need for hearing protection during plant operations and met all regulatory requirements.
For the main building, INNOVA used a highly noise-absorptive shell, acoustically treated ventilation system and interior noise attenuation to create a safe, comfortable work environment. INNOVA provided proprietary acoustical wall and roof assemblies for the HCU building, as well as personnel doors and an acoustical ventilation system. For the Soot Cake Building, INNOVA used highly noise-absorptive panels and supplied and installed the structural steel frame, personnel and equipment doors, acoustical ventilation system, supporting fire protection and suppression system, and electrical.
UNIQUE PROJECT HURDLES
INNOVA met Alberta’s stringent environmental and OH&S noise regulations, providing a site-wide acoustic guarantee. The project was completed on time and on budget with an accident-free record, overcoming labor shortages and harsh winter conditions.
